ACADEMICS
& SCHEDULING 2010
From the Office of the Vice-Principal of Academic Affairs
Welcome back to a new school year! As Coyle and Cassidy High School begins a second century of education we eagerly embrace the challenge of our mission statement affirming that we are “dedicated to excellence in the pursuit of the academic, emotional, physical and spiritual development of our students.” The 21st century holds unique challenges and necessitates educational strategies to most effectively meet those challenges. As stated in the 21st Century Skills and High School Reform Partnership, “High School reform initiatives must embrace a meaningful and ambitious agenda - preparing all students with the knowledge and skills that will truly prepare them to thrive.” At Coyle and Cassidy High School, we have embraced this challenge by developing a literacy initiative model which integrates spirituality, reading, writing, numeracy and technology more fully into our curriculum. Our literacy directors, Mrs. Donna Fournier - Reading, Mrs. Susan Kiley - Technology, Ms. Carrie Lund - Writing, Ms. Anne Molloy - Numeracy and Mrs. Kathleen St. Laurent - Spirituality will work closely with classroom teachers to ensure that our students are prepared for a successful high school career and develop the skills necessary for their future.
This new model fosters cross discipline collaboration among teachers to ensure that students not only are exposed to content but develop skills that they will carry throughout their lifetimes. Throughout the year, teachers will be meeting by grade level to plan and implement student centered goals. The literacy initiative replaces the traditional department centered model in an effort to enhance the student experience.
A new school year is very exciting but may bring some anxiety as well. Your child’s guidance counselor is an excellent resource for any overall concern or question that you or your child may have. Specific questions related to a particular subject area are best directed to your child’s teacher. They may be contacted either by e-mail or voice mail.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming Back to School Nights. Please accept my best wishes for a great school year.
Sincerely, Kathleen St. Laurent Vice-Principal of Academic Affairs
